1.When did the Civil War take place? Why?
The Civil War (1860- 1865) opposed the South/ the SOUTHERN states which had decided to secede and the North where the president (called Lincoln) wanted to abolish slavery.
The North won the war but Lincoln was killed/ murdered.
2.What were the Jim Crow Laws?
The Emancipation Proclamation Act was signed in 1863; slavery was officially abolished in 1865. But in the South a new system was born: Jim Crow was the name given to the segregation laws: black and white people could not share the same public places…
So N.O leaders pretended that their city was a lovely place as African Americans and their difficulties were hidden. N.O just looked like a nice “romantic city”…
f) Use your own words to sum up the different reasons why New Orleans became attractive.
To put it in a nutshell/ TO sum up in a word
new transports, peace, hotels, guidebooks; an exhibition, the illusion of a great romantic city, different forms of architecture, money from the North… contributed to the success of tourism.
